May was a quiet month when it came to new mobile phones being released – the HTC Desire and the Versace Unique were it, unless you include the Dell Streak, which is really more of a compact tablet than a mobile phone. This month we begin with the LG Town GT350.

Aimed at the younger user, the two Microsoft KIN handsets are due to be released later this year. The KIN ONE and KIN TWO are very similar to other social networking focused handsets so what makes these special?

The HTC Legend has a classy design and a casing made from aluminium giving it a more elegant look than the usual plastic cased handsets. Some have even called it a ‘minimalistic work of art’, so yes, it looks great, but what does it do that’s so special?

The Nokia N97 Mini is just the N97 but smaller, or is it? With less memory (8GB down from 32GB) smaller screen and even a more compact QWERTY keyboard, why choose this one over the original? Well it also has added benefits; apart from its smaller size making it easier to handle and lighter to carry around, it is also much cheaper than the original, which is of course due to the streamlining of certain features.

The Samsung B3310 Smart Phone has a handy compact design suitable to fit in your hand comfortably. Its rather snazzy design is possibly aimed at the younger market, but that’s no reason the more mature person can’t enjoy a phone with real personality.

If March is any indication, it looks as if the mobile phone industry might be pulling back from littering the market with a plethora of new phones and concentrating on a few key devices to pull our attention instead.

On Friday, Vodafone announced that its customers can now pre-order the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. The handset will be available on 2 April and will come free with a two year £35 monthly contract (900 minutes, unlimited texts, 500 MB mobile internet).

I am a huge fan of Nokia phones. But, even I must admit that Nokia – the largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world – has become a bit of the old aunt in today’s mobile phone market. While it’s low-end and middle-road mobiles are still doing quite well, when it comes to cutting-edge Smartphone offerings, Nokia just doesn’t stack up against the likes of Google and Apple. But, Nokia seems comfortable with that. Perhaps their vision is elsewhere?
