Apple’s legal wrangles continue this month as Samsung filed a legal writ against the American company over patent infringements. This time Samsung argues that Apple stole its technology for use in the iPad mini. The writ alleges that Apple infringed eight Samsung patents.

The Korean outfit asked a judge to rule on specific aspects of its technologies that Samsung believe Apple has used in the design of its iPad mini, which went on sale this month.

Interestingly, while Apple did come to an arrangement with another Asian manufacturer a couple of weeks ago, it appears that the US conglomerate is also continuing its own legal battles. The latest is against Google’s Jelly Bean Android 4.2 platform. Apple has been trying to target Android, but up to now has had to do it secondhand by taking on its partners, notably Samsung and HTC.

The aim is for sales bans to be imposed and while Apple has partially achieved this, particularly in the US, it has not been totally successful. Samsung appears to be trying the same tactic.

The HTC-Apple agreement was very favourable to Apple, who managed to secure royalties of up to $8 (£5.50) per Android smartphone sold; however, HTC management disputes this figure. A spokesperson for the Asian outfit said: “I think that these estimates are baseless and very, very wrong. It is an outrageous number, but I’m not going to comment anything on a specific number.”

He added: “I believe we have a very, very happy settlement and a good ending.” Blog
