What Do I Need To Know Before Going PAYG?

PAYG, or pay as you go, is becoming more and more popular in the UK, as phone users want to avoid signing contracts. There are a few reasons that you might want to do this. Primary among these reasons is that in general, a PAYG system will save you money. You pay for what you use, rather than for a package, so most people don’t spend as much.

You also avoid getting surprises in your monthly bill, since you can control your phone spending much more easily. Plus, of course, you’re not getting sucked into signing a two year contract, so you can walk away any time, change providers, sign a contract elsewhere if you wish, and not be subject to contract cancellation fees. However, before making the decision to go PAYG, there are some things that you should be aware of…

Phones are Not Subsidized…

A benefit to some people of signing a contract is that the phone they want is subsidized, meaning they don’t have to pay the full price of the phone up front. However, with a PAYG contract you will be required to pay full price for a phone, or to already own a device that you wish to use. This can be a hefty investment, a PAYG iPhone 5 can cost you a few hundred pounds up front. But you will be saving in monthly costs. Probably.

Not Everyone Saves Money…

Heavy phone users tend not to save money using PAYG. This is because calling minutes cost more per minute on PAYG schemes. If you’re the kind of person who uses all of their hundreds of free calling minutes on a contract phone plan, switching to PAYG probably is not going to save you money, and will in fact end up costing you more. So consider your phone habits before switching.

Data is Dangerous…

If you have a smart phone one area where you can rack up some serious credit usage is with data. Data is expensive and can end up sucking away all your credit. Many PAYG providers have special data plans that are worth looking into. Most providers will give you a certain amount of free data if you put credit on your phone every month, and it’s really a good idea to keep on top of this as it can seriously save you cash.

Be On the Look Out For Specials…

Just because you’re a PAYG customer doesn’t mean that mobile service providers don’t have special offers for you. Just buying the SIM card and some credit and walking away isn’t a good plan. See what else the provider has to offer. For example, Orange has a great “animal” plan which will give you different rewards for topping up your credit monthly. Or T-Mobile will give you free unlimited data as long as you put a minimum of £15 of credit on your phone a month. You might not want the hassle of a contract, but it might be worth your while to sign up for special deals. Blog
