Android 2.2 Update For HTC Magic

HTCMAGIC Android 2.2 Update For HTC MagicOrange and T-Mobile may not be able to update the Samsung Galaxy S at the moment, but if you have the HTC Magic then you are in luck.

The Magic is quite an old phone by comparison (released in 2008), but Vodafone has decided to give it a new lease of life by updating the Android operating system to Froyo, version 2.2.

That said though, given that it is a massive jump from version 1.5 when the HTC Magic was first launched, not all of the Froyo features will be enabled. Those that are include the following features: new Gmail client, USB tethering, a new YouTube client, Exchange support plus the ability to copy applications to microSD cards.

The features that won’t be available however include Flash video playback, live wallpapers and WiFi hotspot creation. Unfortunately this demonstrates the limitations of the built-in hardware rather than the software.

There is also another downside to this update. It seems it cannot be carried out manually. Instead users have to wait for the system to ‘find’ the phone. Once this happens, the update process will take place in two halves. First it has to load, and second the phone needs to reboot itself for the application to take effect.

Speaking in a press release a spokesperson for Vodafone said: “HTC Magic was the first Android device we brought into our range…It’s great news for them that they’ll be able to update the handset to current version of Android…”
