Mobile phone technology is developing at breath taking speed. No longer is it just a phone, text messenger or even camera phone, it’s now basically a hand held computer.

It is unlikely to replace the desktop or laptop computer as the standard but it is certainly making a play for it.

No doubt the developers of mobile applications will want to see this happen. And with the likes of Google getting in on the act with their recent purchase of Android Inc., it could happen sooner rather than later.

The most recent development is the Smartphone with the Android mobile operating system using linux kernel; the kernel being “a bridge between applications and the actual data processing done at the hardware level.”

Taking advantage of this newish technology is Handmark, a mobile applications developer, who have just launched their Twitter Applications for Android smartphones.

Called TweetCaster, it “makes tweeting from Android-based smartphones fast, easy, and fun, delivering a simple, yet comprehensive Twitter experience.”

Also coming soon, albeit to Germany, is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. Originally due for release this month it has been delayed till April.

The Xperia X10 “runs on Android 1.6 and features a massive 4.0″ WVGA.” It also has a “scratch-resistant capacitive screen and a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU”
