iPhone Saga Continues
Despite the popularity of the Apple’s newest iPhone, the reception saga continues. A leaked document has revealed that Apple has conceded that there is an issue with reception on the iPhone 4. However, the same document also said that the problem wasn’t confined to just their handset.
The relevant comment in the document said: “Gripping almost any mobile phone in certain places will reduce its reception. This is true of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and many other phones we have tested. It is a fact of life in the wireless world.”
Apple’s memo continued: “If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 4, avoid covering the black strip in the lower-left corner of the metal band.”
“The use of a case or bumper that is made out of rubber or plastic may improve wireless performance by keeping your hand from directly covering these areas.”
This seems to contradict the idea that Apple intends offering a software upgrade to solve the problem and again appears to absolve itself of responsibility.
The memo was issued for the benefit of AppleCare staff to enable them to answer queries. Interestingly the same document also told AppleCare staff that they were not to tell customers they can have a free rubber bumper or shield. Instead if customers want one, they will have to pay £25.
The bumper is placed over the casing covering the antenna. This is unlikely to go down well with Apple customers.
